Wordsworth Barn, holiday cottage is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of the Lake District. Please find below more information on the local area.
Patterdale
Patterdale is a small peaceful hamlet at the southern end of Ullswater. There are numerous walks from the cottage door. It lies at the foot of the majestic Place Fell, and you can also reach Angle Tarn, High Street and Martindale to the east. To the West lies the Helvellyn Range. The village has a pub, The White Lion Inn, a hotel as well as a village store and post office. You can also buy Mohair and Herdwick wool socks, rugs and throws from the Crookabeck Farm Shop, which is just up the road from Wordsworth Barn.
Glenridding
Half a mile to the north of Patterdale lies the village of Glenridding. The wonderful Ullswater Steamers sail all year round from the pier to Howtown and Pooley Bridge. Glenridding is also home to the Glenridding Sailing Centre, which provides a base for many of the water borne activities on Ullswater.
Glenridding has several pubs, including The Travellers Rest, Beckside and the Ramblers Bar. There are also 2 general stores selling a wide range of food and beverages, a newsagent, cash point machine (in Sharmans store), several cafes and restaurants, two hotels as well as the Ullswater Tourist Information centre.
Other Local Places of Interest
To the south of Patterdale lies Brotherswater, which has a superb flat and scenic walk along the western edge of the Lake, and a nice walk back from the Brotherswater Inn through the quaint village of Hartsop to Wordsworth Barn. To the North of Glenridding the National Trust waterfall at Aira Force is always popular, as is Pooley Bridge at the northern end of Ullswater itself.
The Lake District
Ambleside, Windermere, Grasmere, Keswick and Penrith are all within a 30 to 40 minute drive of Wordsworth Barn, making it an ideal base to explore the whole of The Lake District.
